Homeless Seeds

I have LOTS of seeds that need to be planted now, I think :SHollyhocks, Liatris, Lupine, I can't remember all of them. Now, because these are seeds there isn't any promise/guarantee that they will actually germinate and many are biennials. But I would REALLY love for them to have a home and *I think* you guys have some space they can be planted .... ? Would it be okay if I came and scattered them and marked the planting area off with bamboo twigs and twine? Also, anyone doing any volunteer work…See More

I have at least one Lilac Bush I can donate to the Downtown Garden. You guys interested? It doesn't look the healthiest but I am thinking, hoping that is because the plant is shutting down for the season.

Have you heard from Diana about this or any other garden members'? Are there people within their organization that are interested in being the labyrinth crew? Do they need seeds? I might could get seeds, esp for things like Hollyhocks, Liatris,…

Introduction

Hi my name is Donna and no I do not have a plot at the Downtown Garden. I do not live Downtown, I am slightly afraid of the Interstate here, I don't think there are (currently) any available plots, and parking would be awesome (very scared of parking on the side of the road in Des Moines). Yes, I am have several fears and concerns. :)

I just turned 29 (DOB: 2.17.1981). I come from Florida, my family still lives there. So at least once a year I either Fly to Florida or make a long trip… Continue

Hi Donna,

Noticed you just signed up for the garden site :)

Could you share a bit about your self?
Are you interested in joining the garden next season or just joining to learn about the garden?

introduction thread... Hmmmm , good question! I don't think so - - Perhaps the best way is to get people to add something to their profile when they join. Perhaps I can try to add a request to do that via the sign up process...

But I think personal profiles pages are really the best because that's where people would look to find out that type of information.

See you sat. :)

Donna,
Yeah, that was really a good idea to have a seed swap! And glad it was the two comm. gardens. I am still deciding whether I should actually get a plot because I now have a yard AND I ordered honey bees for spring. So, I don't want to get a plot and not take care of it. But, I LOVE being connected to other gardeners and the community. So, I may just be a "friend" or advocate for all the community gardens....Still thinking. It would be great if some day there could be honey bees included in comm gardens. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again next week! This is awesome. Kyla

I like community gardening. It is healing, inclusive, productive, and even though I may or not get a plot, I like the community! It's a whole group of people who love gardening! Can't beat that. Brian said he doesn't have a plot either. So, I guess community gardening extends beyond the phys boundaries of the garden to the rest of the community. Just what it is meant to do...

Thanks so much for check in on what variety the the liatris seeds were!
That was really kind of you :)

Last year we planted a strong base with a small amount of plant diversity. Fox Sedges in the wetest areas, prairie drop seed in the base as well (I'll be a little worried about them this spring). with little blue stem along the true north pathway. These base plants were intended to give the largest root structure for soaking up all that water...

We also tried to plant some liatris plugs but had some bad timing with a big rain and they were mostly drowned out before they got established. There were also three or four Milkweed varietys that were a center piece.

I haven't given much thought to any ideas for things to plant this year. But I'll certainly hope to start some of the liatris seeds :)

Donna, You should talk to Teva Dawson of the city parks dept. and or Drew Maifeld he has been talking to her about that. I have been out of the loop on the compleat details on this subject. I only know what I have been told by Teva. My Idea on this issue is that if its possible the city could figure out what lots are located near people who are in need of food and would be willing to help grow that food on those lots. If the city helped by setting up raised beds and started the process and the got some adults and kids involved in producing the food. It seems a logical idea to to many small gardens over one or two large gardens. Unforunatly logic does not always work. On the otherhand sometimes all you need is the right person to sell the idea to the community that would be affected by this idea.

I'm not sure about where to find that specific information - - Had Peter been the one who mentioned it? I will try to post something on the www.urbanfooddsm.ning.com website in the coming month.

I do know that there is a STRONG interest by citizens for community gardens and that the City is recognizing it. I will keep you and others up to date with anything that I come across.

I will put some energy into the bigger picture of starting more community gardens through out the city but for the immediate future my energy is focused on getting the downtown garden running a bit more smoothly.

I'm excited to see your passion for this Donna - would you like to stop by Emily's sometime or take a walk to chat about ideas?
