Downtown Community Garden - Des Moines Iowa

Growing Together @ the corner of E 6th and Scott Street.

As you become a more involved with your garden and learn more about plants, you will eventually discover that places like Home Depot and various nurseries found around town often have a very limited selection of plant to choose from. In order to get some variety in your garden with higher quality plants, you'll eventually find yourself turning to ordering seeds from catalogs or online. Seed Saver Exchange is one example of these outside seed banks and is a great place to get a wide variety of vary good seeds from for your garden. They are based out of Wisconsin so you know that everything they sell should for the most part grow decently here.
I encourage you to visit their website at: http://www.seedsavers.org/

I've also attached their 2009 Catalog if you wanted to browse through it and get an idea of what is out there.

Jonathan, I went online to the seed saver exchange web site and filled out here seed donation form
for the garden and faxed it to them. also I ordered a copy of there catalog.
It looks ok for thursday kick off, only a 30% chance of rain according to
the weather service.
Pete.
Thanks for doing this peter. From looking at the weather I think we have a pretty good chance of keeping with the schedule. If any rain does hit at the time we are working I am thinking it will be fairly light.
Are there any nurseries in Des Moines that carry Seed Savers Exchange seeds? Or Seeds of Change? Or that specialize in organically grown products?
Joel
Sydney & I went to Living History Farmers & noticed that they had Seed Saver Exchange seeds for sale in the Visitor's center. We picked up some melons & beets. Apparently it is what they grow on the farm.

If anyone is looking for beautiful plants, head over to Harvey's in Adel, they have some unique plants.
I went online to seed saver exchange. they have a program were they will give community gardens free seeds.
that program ended this year before we could take advantage of it, so we will have to waite till next year to use it.
Pete.
I also found out that they are at the downtown farmer's market on a weekly basis. Their plants looked absolutely wonderful!
