Downtown Community Garden - Des Moines Iowa

Growing Together @ the corner of E 6th and Scott Street...

Jonathan Corbett

Who would like to take over helping people sign up for Plots this year?

Hey Downtown Gardeners!

I just found out that I will be moving to China very shortly and I was
wondering who whould like to take over my role of signing up garden
members to plots this upcoming year?

The job is rather simple and you actually get to meet everyone involved
with the garden!

Here are all the tasks that I foresee someone or a team or people doing:

  1. Get together with a group of interested garden members sometime in March to update the sign-up sheet and list of garden rules that every plot holder agrees to each year they are involved with the garden.
  2. Come to the spring workdays (not scheduled yet) or other times throughout the year at yours and other people's convenience to help sign up existing and new garden members to the garden.  I would say try to
find a small half hour time slot at least once or twice a week when you
are available to meet up with people.
  3. Take consideration to not double book a plot and try to be fair and balanced when assigning plots.
It usually takes no more the 5 min to sign someone up so this is not a
major time commitment.  As a good standard of practice though, it is
always a good idea to meet new garden members at the garden when you
sign them up so that everyone understands exactly which plot will be
theirs and to show them where the tools and water can be found.

I leave Des Moines Thursday, February 25th so if nobody volunteers before then I'll still at least share my knowledge with some of the garden members who can temporary take it over until a more long term person can be found.  The commitment is for one year terms so you also don't have to think of this as signing your life away.

Thanks everyone and I loved being apart of the garden with you all!

Well, this seems as good a place as any to announce my similar news. I just got word yesterday that I have a job offer up in NW Iowa. I will be moving to Sioux Center in about 4 weeks and, regretfully, leaving my gardening spaces here in Des Moines.
The Downtown Garden plots literally kept my family fed through my unemployment, so thank you. I enjoyed meeting everyone, I enjoyed the space and the land, and hopefully I left it a little better than I found it.
I'll stay on the Ning site, just to lurk and offer gardening advice occasionally. If any of you find yourselves up in NW Iowa, swing by and visit, I'm sure I'll have a garden to show you there. (Although it looks like I might have to start a community garden from scratch. ) :-)

Jonathan, please travel safely, it was a pleasure to garden with you. China!! That's really exciting! Send us some cool seeds!

Goddess Bless,
Jennie

I would be intersted in this position. I'm new to the garden, but want to get involved and often have evening/weekend time available for signing up folks.

Wow, Jonathan. Wish you best of luck in your travels. It was certainly nice working with you last Summer.

Jennie, best wishes on the move, as well! Hopefully you can find a place to sow your seeds. :)

I'd be more than happy to help out in some capacity. I don't know if my schedule will allow for being the sole person for signing up, but am happy to provide assistance.
