Downtown Community Garden - Des Moines Iowa

Growing Together @ the corner of E 6th and Scott Street.

I've noticed that there are photos appearing on the Community Garden Main page that have nothing to do with our community garden. I find this distracting. Maybe these photos could be posted on personal profiles, under "my photos". No offense to folks wanting to show off vacation pictures, or whatnot, but the main page doesn't seem to me to be the appropriate place to do this, where we are posting photos showcasing the results of our hard work.

I agree, being a professional Photographer I agree we should have photos showcasing our garden and people, not other gardens.
Pete.
I agree with you guys about the pictures and I have removed the ones not from our garden. But just so that you know how the website works, any photos posted by anyone on this site will automatically appear on the front page whether we want it to be there or not. Also, any photos that appear on their side must be rotated by the person who posted them. The website administrators can remove images, but for some reason we can't rotate them.

A gal named Shana and her son Roman stopped by one day as they were driving by and noticed the work we had been doing at the garden... They stopped in to say hello and take a few photo's to share with their aunt.

The images mentioned above were from Shana's Aunt who had made a profile and is interested in stopping by to visit our garden the next time she was in Des Moines. She had also offered to talk to us about some of the Permaculture techniques she uses in the gardens that she has started. You can see here comment on my profile "wall".

I know nobody really knew the story behind these images but I feel a bit bad about it all.

I don't necessarily disagree about what photos should go up on the website but I felt it was important to give some context.

Best Wishes to everyone !
Thanks for that info, Drew.
if someone wants to share their acheivements that are outside of this garden, it should be taken as a source of pride for that person, and maybe.....If you see that person has knowledge that is beyond or different than yours....MAYBE you could learn something..

Thank you. I am Shana, and my aunt STARTED a neighborhood garden in San Francisco, that was recently visted my Michelle Obama. She took the land, ALL BY HERSELF, and made it what it is today.. Along the way more volunteers and neighborhood people came to see what the fuss was, and realized that they had a viable source of food, and didn't have to pay the outrageous SAN FRAN prices for veggies...-- I am a little offended by the deletion of the pix, but I do understand.

My Aunt is an angel who wants to share her knowlege with the world, she is currently in another state, helping ANOTHER community with their garden.

Knowledge and the sharing of that knowledge can only make projects better... I thought that was somewhat what this fourm was about..

Thanks

Shana--(lamazogogo)

I think that the best way to share info about other great gardens that we can learn from is to just post links to their website in the "Gardner's Forum" group with a description of the garden. This way, any gardener here who wants to learn more about what other people have done can see it all through their own website (this promotes that particular garden better anyways by going directly to the source). The groups section is set up for these specialized topics and so would be more appropriate there anyways.

What we are trying to do with this site is to make it so that when anyone visits this website, they easily see and learn about what this particular garden is doing. It would be really great to have a separate section on this website that keeps pictures of other gardens for people to learn about, but we are not able to do that on this site because of technical limitation imposed by Ning (the host of this site) that are beyond our control. As far as I know, any pictures that are posted anywhere on this site go directly to the front page and cannot be removed without deleting them from the site entirely.

This is why links to other garden websites or file attachments like PDFs and Word files that have the pictures inside them are the only way to let people see things that we don't want on the front page (because that are not about this garden). If we had created our own website completely from scratch outside the Ning framework, we could have done all of this and pictures would not be a problem. But right now we don't have anything close to the technical and financial resources required for us to be able to put together a website that functions and looks better then what we currently have with Ning.

I hope this helps everyone understand the situation better.
Thanks, and it sounds like a great idea..I hope no one took offense, but I KNOW that what everyone is doing is HARD and rewarding work. I drive by, and see families, and the progress and it is a wonderful feeling. I am NOT much of a gardener, but I admire the time, dedication and skill that it takes to make plants flourish. Thank you all again for having a wonderful place for my son and I to visit, while we await the return of our aunt... Just being around the garden brings back GREAT memories for us...

Peace and blessings
