Downtown Community Garden - Des Moines Iowa

Growing Together @ the corner of E 6th and Scott Street.

Planning on gardening in the same plot next year? Interested in using your plot over winter? I'm planning on ordering garlic to plant in the fall, which will be ready to harvest in late spring/early summer. There is a great farm which has package deals with a different garlic varieties. See http://www.filareefarm.com/
Let me know if you would be interested in splitting a package. The more the merrier so we can get as many different types as possible.

I am in. :)
Hi Amy -- I am interested in splitting a package.

Rebecca
Sounds tasty to me! :)
What package were you thinking?
Here is some more info about growing garlic in Iowa. http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/1997/2-28-1997/garlic.html
ISU extension recommends letting the garlic grow through August and September, but I know people who have harvested it earlier in the season, i.e., late may, early june.

If there is enough interest, I would like to get the "VARIETY PACK (3 lb)For the experimenter who likes a challenge. Includes 1/2 lb each of four basic varieties: Rocambole, Purple Stripe, Artichoke and Silverskin, plus 1/2 lb each of a Marbled Purple Stripe, and an Asiatic strain. Yield up to 20 lbs. Price $52.00"

I definitely think there will be enough interest to get one of the garden packs which include "four basic types: two hardnecks and Artichoke and Silverskin softneck varieties."

Let me know what you want, regarding both price or quantity. Generally, I'm thinking that if a person wants some of the specialty variety in the variety pack, they should pay a bit more. But otherwise, I plan on splitting the cost commensurate to the amount of cloves each person tells me they want to plant.
Mmmm, 20 lbs of garlic....I can smell the salsa & spag. sauce now! :)
Amy -- I really do not need any specialty varities -- and I need only enough to grow for fun and for myself. Rebecca

Garlic has been ordered! We found a place in Illinois that charged a bit less and ordered three varieties that should grow well in Iowa. I should have it mid-October and we can arrange distribution and payment details then. Until then, happy harvests. . .
I grow hardneck varieties every year. I highly recommend it. It grows easily, has very few pests and reliably produces. I plant in the fall when soil temps reach 40 degrees. I cover them with a couple inches of straw or leaves to reduce damage from the freeze/thaw cycle. Just remember to separate the cloves, don't plant a whole head together. :-) I did that my first year. :-D
Hi all-
I should have the garlic this weekend. Drop me an e-mail so I can arrange getting garlic to you.
Cheers-
A
