Downtown Community Garden - Des Moines Iowa

Growing Together @ the corner of E 6th and Scott Street.

I did it again! Cut jalapenos with bare hands. Now my hands are starting to burn. I thought this time it would be safe because the peps were roasted on the grill, so I was just peeling off the charred skin. Anyone know of any "miracle cures" to stop the burn? Other than washing really well after peeling the peppers?
And on another note, which should have come as the first note...thanks to all who welcomed Bret and I to the garden picnic last night. We really enjoyed the company, food, tours and talk with various folks. Nice to meet everyone. The garden is a really positive thing going on in our community.
Oh, and the fungus on the end of the corn is called corn smut, here in the US. In Mexico it has another name and is considered a delicacy, although I think when the smut is smaller than the one harvested last night. My dad was happy to get it and declared it would be breakfast.

I have heard that if you wash your hands in milk, that works. The same cure for when you eat a hot pepper. As for the corn fungas I hope your dad does not end up in the hospital.
Thanks for joining us for our picknick, any time you two want to stop by again for a picknick your more then welcome, just check the web site to see if we have one going.
I had problems with this a few years ago, and the problem only got worse after taking a shower (due to pores opening, I guess.) The only thing that offered me relief is soaking my hand in sour cream. It sticks to the hand better than milk. I had to do several applications, along with holding a cold wet towel to my hand for most of the day. Hope your hand is doing better, now!
Thanks! I have never heard of the sour cream thing. Last time was way worse. I slept with my hands in a bowl of ice water- actually didn't sleep tho. THis time was not so bad. I will remember the sour cream trick. AND be more careful...but never give up jalapenos. Kyla
